Calendar Template

Okay, I've decided on a template - simple format with links to event page and the website of the sponsoring society.

I'm open to changes - just leave a comment!

Day and full date [month spelled out]
Venue - name and full address
Time(s)
Title of event (optional: speaker name or other details)
Link to sponsoring society

Example:

Saturday, December 12, 2009
California Genealogical Society and Library, 2201 Broadway, Suite LL2, Oakland 1:00 p.m.
Steve Harris – New York City: Insider's Guide to Research
Sponsored by the California Genealogical Society and Library

I've decided to put up a calendar for December to get things started. Please format your events and email them to me.

How Do I Become a Member of the Team?

My hope is to make this process as painless as possible!

So far I see three requirements:

1. You belong to a genealogical society within 75 miles of San Francisco.

2. You have a Google account.

3. You are committed to adding your society's events and meetings to the calendar.

That's it! I'll be setting up a template to make formatting easy and we'll be using Google Docs to store each month events before they are published on the first of every month.

Questions? Email me or leave a comment.

What Societies Are Included in the Calendar?

It's a good question asked indirectly by Sheri Fenley of The Educated Genealogist blog:

Kool Kool Kitty! Stockton isn't really Bay Area but if you want to include us, I'd be happy to help out.

The best thing about starting a new venture is you get to make the rules! I found a very cool Google Maps tool Radius Around Point and drew a circle around San Francisco.

A 75-mile radius includes Stockton, home of the San Joaquin Genealogical Society, as well as Sacramento which was part of Steve's original Genealogy Calendar.

So, is your gen society in the circle? If so, please join the team!

Welcome!

Welcome to the San Francisco Bay Area Genealogy Calendar. Stephen Danko, of Steve's Genealogy Blog, started the calendar on his blog in January 2008. It was a one-man show and Steve generously kept it going for over a year. Unfortunately, his busy speaking schedule has limited his time and the May 2009 calendar was the last month he published.

It really isn't fair to ask one person to take on the task for all the genealogical societies in the Bay Area and I've been grappling with a solution for months. Today I had a potentially brilliant idea: why not create a team blog and let each society add their own events?

So, I'm putting the question out there in the blogosphere and addressing it to Bay Area genealogical societies. Do you have a member who is willing to learn to do a little team blogging in order to create a Bay Area Genealogy Calendar?

If so, leave a comment!

I'd love to put a team together by January 1, 2010.
